During the space race of the 1960s, several aerospace companies were inventing and mocking up model lunar landing modules, including engineers at Boeing. This is a Boeing model of a lunar module that was never built. For the 1969 Apollo moon landing, Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. built the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), and Boeing later designed and built the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), or "moon buggy," used during the final three Apollo missions.
