Roi George Partridge (1888-1984) was born in Centralia, when Washington was still a territory. His family moved to Seattle in 1892, where his father eventually owned the local newspaper. In 1909, Partridge studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York, then traveled to Munich, Germany, to study etching. He also spent several years in Paris working as a printmaker just before the start of World War I. At that time, he returned to Seattle for a year before moving permanently to California. As shown in this drawing and others in the MOHAI collection, Partridge captured elements of Seattle's maritime industry and drew portraits of the city's prominent individuals. He was married three times, including twenty years with his first wife, famed photographer Imogen Cunningham.
