Oxyoline Machine, used to aid in curing colds, pneumonia, and other ailments, ca. 1909
Order an ImageIn the early 20th century, it was thought that administering oxygen to patients would ease various respitory ailments and other health issues. This machine was purchased and used by Mrs. Oscar Ameline who was born in Seattle in the 1880s and lived there all her life. The Oxyoline was also used by her children. According to a pamphlet that came with the machine, "since not more than 25% of Oxygen inhaled is absorbed, we must resort to a more active form of Oxygen if we are to meet this...compulsory Oxygen famine from which we are suffering."
