The Boeing SST project was hampered by design and environmental concerns. Though the U.S. government eventually cut funding to the project and prototypes were never completed, contributing to massive Boeing layoffs, this project was the first of its kind in the United States and was part of a supersonic transport technology race against the Soviets during the Cold War years, ca. 20th century.
