Stuffed and mounted cougar donated to MOHAI by Eddie Bauer, ca. 1950-1960

Concerned about the region's declining cougar population, Eddie Bauer (1899-1986) donated this stuffed and mounted cougar to the museum in 1965 in what some might consider an ironic gesture today. In the 1960s, the cougar was hunted to near extinction in many areas, and Bauer worried that many might never see one in the wild. Bauer had a lifelong love of the outdoors and of sporting activities. His first store opened in 1920 at 211 Seneca Street. At first he sold mostly tennis and golf equipment, but soon expanded into fishing tackle, hunting gear, and outdoor clothing.
