Foghorn from fireboat, "Snoqualmie," 1890

The "Snoqualmie" was Seattle's first fireboat, launched in 1891. The steam-powered vessel was docked on the waterfront at the foot of Madison Street where Seattle Fire Department Station No. 5 was located. "Snoqualmie" worked the frontlines of waterfront firefighting until she was replaced by the gas-powered "Alki" in 1927, and ultimately retired from service in 1932. This "Hansen" foghorn was invented by Norwegian sea captain Ole Christian Hansen in 1880 as a reliable and affordable maritime safety device.
