Order an ImageThe wearer of this pin also wore a Taft Day ribbon which commemorated President Howard Taft's visit to the AYPE on September 30, 1909. The two shields, one in stars and stripes, and the other a version of the British red ensign with the union jack above, represent the United States and Canada. Taft Day was attended by nearly 61,000 people, making it one of the most popular days at the fair overall. Taft came to the fair heavily guarded as President William McKinley had been assassinated in 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
