Hiking boots, used by Paul Harper in the Cascades, ca. 1900
Order an ImageAs a young man, University of Washington student Paul C. Harper wore these boots while hiking and climbing in the Cascades. The weight of the boots and the nails in the soles are very different from today's lightweight leather and synthetic boots designed specifically for climbing. Lumberjacks and others who needed sturdy footwear with good traction also wore this type of boot.
