William Myers was in the meat business since before 1900, but he opened his butcher shop in the Georgetown neighborhood on Duwamish Avenue, now Airport Way, around 1911 and was in operation until the 1960s. Amos Eldridge Stuart founded the Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company in Kent, Washington in 1889. He changed the name to Carnation Evaporated Milk Company in 1901 and established a cow breeding farm in Tolt, Washington. By 1926, the company had six Seattle-area dairies and six local evaporated milk plants, plus 24 evaporated milk plants elsewhere in the country. The town of Tolt changed its name to Carnation in 1917 in honor of the farm, but then changed it back to Tolt in 1928, before finally changing to Carnation for good in 1951.
