Emil George Sick was born in 1894 in Tacoma, Washington, and died in Seattle in 1964. He was best known for being a successful brewery industrialist (Sicks Rainier Brewing Company and others), and owner of Seattle's baseball team, the Rainiers, which he purchased in 1937. A year later, he built the now demolished baseball stadium that beared his name: Sick Stadium. As president of the Seattle Historical Society, Sick was instrumental in obtaining funds for the construction of the Museum of History & Industry. He was also a director of the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. The artist signature, CJ (Charles J.) Fox, was an alias for Leo Fox, a New York artist who, during the mid-twentieth century, took credit for painting many portraits of leading societal figures. The portraits were actually painted by Irving Resnikoff (1897-1988), a Russian immigrant artist who executed the paintings from photographs.
