Joshua Green (1869–1975) was a sternwheeler captain, businessman, and eventually an established banker, purchasing the Peoples Savings Bank in Seattle in 1925. He changed the name to Peoples Bank and Trust Co. two years later. Richard Dwight (R.D.) Merrill (1869-1964), came to the Pacific Northwest in the 1890's to establish timber holdings. His father had formed the Merrill and Ring Lumber Company with his son-in-law, Clark L. Ring, in Michigan in 1886. But by 1902, the company moved to new production headquarters in Hoquiam, Washington, and based its corporate headquarters in the banking center of Seattle. In 1907, Merrill became President of the Merrill-Ring Lumber Company. The artist signature, CJ (Charles J.) Fox, was an alias for Leo Fox, a New York artist who, during the mid-twentieth century, took credit for painting many portraits of leading societal figures. The portraits were actually painted by Irving Resnikoff (1897-1988), a Russian immigrant artist who executed the paintings from photographs.
