Brass preserving kettle, 1855-1890
This brass kettle was donated by Carrie B. Raser whose family came to Seattle around 1890. This kettle was likely used around that time. It is a “spun” kettle which was popular in the late 19th-century. Prior to 1851, most kettles were hammered over a form and the pieces dovetailed together. H.W. Hayden patented a new technique for creating kettles out of a single sheet of material, where a machine would spin the brass while it was being shaped.
