This flag was mounted on the wall of a classroom at Warren Avenue School located in the lower Queen Anne Hill neighborhood. The street on which the school was situated is atrributed to Major-General Joseph Warren (1741-1775), who was killed at Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War. Opening in 1903, the school was built to relieve the overcrowding at nearby Thomas Mercer and Denny schools, when enrollment was increasing by 2,000 children annually. In the 1940s, the Warren Avenue School was one of the first public schools to provide education for children with cerebral palsy - a program started by parents and physicians who believed these children were capable of learning and deserved the opportunity to do so.
