Red flannel shirt owned by Will Saeher, Chief of Ballard Fire Dept. ca. 1900

This red flannel shirt belonged to Will Saeher, Chief of the Ballard Fire Department. At the time, flannel shirts were associated with labor-intensive working-class jobs. While not completely fireproof, wool is a good choice for firefighter’s clothing since stray sparks are more likely to self-extinguish than they would on cotton or linen.
