This dusty pink dress belonged to Catherine Foley Johnson (1894-1961). Catherine was born in Iowa, graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and spent time teaching English in Chicago. In the early 1920s she worked in advertising, first in Seattle and then in New York City. In 1925 she married Philip G. Johnson (1894-1944). Philip was working for the Boeing company at the time and would serve as Boeing president from 1927 to 1934, and 1939 to 1944. Catherine was active with many organizations and charities in Seattle, including the Seattle Historical Society (later MOHAI). This dress was custom made in New York and bears a label with the exact date it was completed: April 18, 1940. The lightness of the dress makes it perfect for an event in Spring or Summer.
