Hewitt Jackson (1914-2007) was a seaman, marine draftsman, and artist. He is best known for his maritime drawings of ships that sailed the Puget Sound and Pacific Northwest. The MOHAI collection contains seven of Hewitt's works. This particular drawing features the SS Beaver which was the first steamship on the Northwest Coast. Originally built in 1835 in England, she sailed to Fort Vancouver by way of Cape Horn, Juan Fernandez and the Sandwich Islands in 1836. Hudson's Bay Company owned the ship for many years, and the Beaver served the fur trading industry from Sitka, Alaska, to Astoria, Oregon, as well as a short lived stint as a passenger vessel, before becoming a Royal Navy survey ship along the British Columbia coast. Her last days were as a tugboat in Victoria and later Vancouver, British Columbia, where on July 25, 1888, she met her end on the rocks off Prospect Point (Stanley Park) in Burrard Inlet.
