This figurehead was originally made for a ship called the Robert Duncan and represented the bearded Mr. Duncan. When the ship came under the management of Hind Rolph it was renamed the William T. Lewis after the port captain. Lewis only had a mustache, so the figurehead was given a “shave” with a chisel and rasp. It was donated to the MOHAI collection by Horace W. McCurdy. McCurdy (1899-1989), born in Port Townsend, was a shipbuilder, bridge builder, civic leader, native Washingtonian, and prolific maritime collector. Both the Lake Washington Floating Bridge and the Hood Canal Bridge were built by his firm, Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging. He was instrumental in the establishment and early development of MOHAI and he donated over 500 maritime-related artifacts to the collection.
