Mahogany rocking chair from Standard Furniture Co. in Seattle, 1890
Order an ImageStandard Furniture Company was an early Seattle retailer of imported furniture that was part of the turn-of-the-century economic boom resulting from the Klondike Gold Rush. The enterprise constructed and opened a permanent high-rise on Second Avenue in 1908. This chair was from the Schrom family mansion located on Terry and Madison Avenues. John Schrom came to Seattle from Ohio in 1881 and purchased a general hardware, tinware, and plumbing supply business on Commercial Street. He ran the business until 1902, when he helped found the Washington Trust Company which merged with Dexter Horton Bank in 1911.
