The tug Justine Foss, named for youngest daughter of Wedell and Edith Foss, leaves Tacoma Harbor. An industrialized shoreline including Hooker Chemicals, the St. Regis pulp mill, St. Paul lumber mill and Dickman Lumber, sprawls beneath the pristine backdrop of Mount Rainier. To the left is a big log dump where enormous “cigar” log rafts arrived from the Olympic Peninsula. Much of this landscape was listed in 1983 as the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Commencement Bay Superfund site. Portions of it were cleaned up and delisted through the 1990s. The final cleanup was done in 2006, and the area will hopefully be removed from the cleanup list after ten more years of monitoring. The artist signature is "Doares" which may by Robert Doares (1911-2005), a landscape painter and genre illustrator from North Carolina, but has not been confirmed.
