Order an ImageRathskeller, or Ratskeller, is a German word for a bar or restaurant located in the basement of a city hall (Rathaus) or nearby. Many taverns, nightclubs, bars, and similar establishments throughout the world use the term, including several different businesses in Seattle. One of these businesses, established in 1905, was located on the northwest corner of 2nd Ave and Cherry Street. In 1911, this same Rathskeller's moved to the nearby J. A. Baillargeon building on the corner of 2nd Ave and Spring Street. The MOHAI collection also has a photo of the interior of a Rathskeller bar located at 94 Pine Street dated to the mid-1930s.
