MOHAI remembers the life and legacy of Lenny Wilkens, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 88.

A Hall of Famer as both a player and coach, Wilkens was the heart of Seattle basketball for more than 50 years. He first joined the Seattle SuperSonics in 1968 as a point guard and quickly became the team’s first superstar. A year later, he became player-coach, ushering in a legendary run that would define the franchise and the city.

Wilkens led the SuperSonics to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1978 and, one year later, to Seattle’s only NBA Championship. He coached the team for eight seasons, guiding them to six playoff berths and forever cementing their place in sports history.

Beyond the court, Wilkens was known for his deep commitment to community. Through decades of charitable work, including long-standing support for the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic at Seattle Children’s, he made a lasting impact on families across the region.

“Even more impressive than Lenny’s basketball accomplishments was his commitment to service—especially in his beloved Seattle,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

From the hardwood to the heart of the city, Lenny Wilkens’ legacy endures as a symbol of excellence, integrity, and community.
