As you explore Mandela: The Official Exhibition this summer, you will encounter stories of collaboration, innovation and compassion that span the globe. One such story began in 1999 on a flight from South Africa to Seattle–a story that not only connects President Mandela and First Lady of South Africa, Graça Machel with leading philanthropists but ultimately laid the groundwork for an organization that has expanded quality health care to tens of millions of people across Africa.
In the autumn of 1999, Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel embarked on a “Building Bridges” visit to Seattle. Their mission was to raise awareness and funds for their foundation’s efforts in education, community development and human rights.
Blaise Judja-Sato, a telecommunications executive accompanied them on that journey. During this flight, Machel and Judja-Sato spoke about their shared passion for humanitarian work.
In early 2000, following the devastating floods caused by Tropical Cyclone Eline in Mozambique, Machel through her Foundation for Community Development (FDC) called on Judja-Sato for support with emergency relief coordination. His company responded by supplying satellite phones and critical support equipment.
While on the ground, Judja-Sato witnessed firsthand the acute shortages of essential resources in rural areas (medicine, vaccines and clean water), largely due to poor infrastructure. Deeply moved by both the immense need and the resilience and generosity of the affected communities, he committed himself to addressing these basic needs long after the immediate crisis had passed.
Upon returning to Seattle, Judja-Sato convened a team of global health and supply chain experts to explore whether a model designed for the most resource-constrained settings could become a new standard for delivering health care everywhere.
Under the mentorship of Machel, Judja-Sato formalized a partnership with FDC. In 2002, the Mozambique Ministry of Health signed an agreement to pilot innovative supply chain solutions in Cabo Delgado province, aiming to vaccinate every child.
