Seattle loves denim! The durable and functional fabric wasn’t invented here, but its association with casual dressing and countercultural style has made it a local favorite. This small exhibit showcases objects and photographs from MOHAI Collections that tell the story of our devotion to denim.
This exhibit includes early 20th-century examples such as a child’s pair of denim overalls made in Seattle and a pair of Chinese “lotus” shoes modified with denim additions. There are also several objects from the 1980s and 1990s when local jeans brands such as UNIONBAY and International News were leading national trends. Photographs from the MOHAI collection tell additional stories about denim worn every day for work or play, and as a representation of identity.
