SUMMARY:History Café: A Waterfront Without Wobblies
DESCRIPTION:Seattle’s central waterfront has long exemplified the ideological tensions and organizational complexities of American labor history as well as the stunning successes of worker solidarity. During the early 20th century\, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) significantly influenced local unions\, promoting “One Big Union” and dual membership in both the IWW and the International Longshoremen’s Association and other waterfront unions. Despite government suppression from 1916 to 1919\, which dismantled much of the IWW’s leadership\, syndicalist principles persisted\, reemerging during 1930s labor mobilizations. However\, Seattle’s unions were not monolithic. Longshoremen cultivated a tradition of independent craft unionism\, resisting alignment with political parties while paradoxically integrating some Communist Party members into leadership roles. Their unions prioritized rank-and-file democracy\, welcoming radicals without submitting to external party control. Conversely\, sailors’ unions often expelled leftist members\, reflecting divergent organizational cultures. \nThese divisions\, as noted by Conor Casey head of the Labor Archives of Washington\, stemmed from ideological and strategic disagreements over union autonomy\, political engagement\, and radicalism’s role in labor struggles. The waterfront’s history thus serves as a lens to examine the resilience of syndicalist and other radical ideals\, the successes of worker solidarity and occupational wisdom\, and the persistent fractures that sometimes hindered broader efforts at unified class solidarity\, leaving a legacy of contested radicalism in Pacific Northwest labor movements.

DESCRIPTION:Join authors Albert Gidari and Brad Holden for a discussion of Seattle’s Bootlegging royalty\, Elise and Roy Olmstead. Elise was the vivacious London girl who came to America and became a Prohibition informant until she married Roy! Government agents caught up to them and the decade of trials that followed put an end to their kingdom. Theirs is a fraught story of resilience and redemption. Gidari’s book\, Elise Olmstead: The Myth and Mystery of Seattle’s “Queen of the Bootleggers\,” is the first biography of the life and times of this secretive\, private\, and some would say manipulative extraordinary woman. Also enjoy special guest appearance by John McFarlane\, grandson of Elise and Roy Olmstead. \nBrad Holden is Seattle’s unofficial local historian and author of Seattle Prohibition: Bootleggers\, Rumrunners\, & Graft in the Queen City. Holden’s book brings Roy Olmstead\, the “Gentleman Bootlegger\,” to life and reveals Seattle during Prohibition with all its corruption\, unquenchable thirst for good booze\, and interesting characters like the radio whiz and inventor Al Hubbard. He was the undoing of Roy Olmstead in the end and the subject of Holden’s book Seattle Mystic Alfred M. Hubbard: Inventor\, Bootlegger\, & Psychedelic Pioneer. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI. \nASL Interpretation and CART captioning are available during the program. DESCRIPTION:The MOHAI Youth Advisors (MYA) are looking for passionate teen photographers in the Seattle area who are willing to share their unique perspectives on the city as part of an in-person and online exhibition. \nSubmit your photos of places in the city that are important to you or hold special meaning. MYA will then choose a selection of the photographs and pair them with a historic photograph or drawing from the MOHAI collection that shares a similar theme\, location\, and/or subject. \nWorks will then be exhibited together with their paired historical image as part of a pop-up exhibit during the summer of 2025. \nOur goal is to showcase a variety of perspectives on the city and inspire curiosity about the places around us. The activities\, the structures\, and the patterns of movement by people\, cars\, and ships all provide glimpses into how people have lived and worked along this shoreline for centuries. Often\, those things that seem new actually have roots deep into the past. \nJoin environmental historian Jennifer Ott for an exploration of those roots and how they have shaped our waterfront into the iconic place it is today. Ott’s talk is based on her new book\, Where the City Meets the Sound: The Story of Seattle’s Waterfront\, which details the waterfront’s history from its storied past to its complex present. Learn about how the drill team continues to define\, represent and celebrate the evolving Asian American experience of its dedicated multigenerational participants. \nWhen Della Chen was a teen in the 80’s she always wanted to be a part of The Seattle Chinese Community Girls Drill Team but regretfully never tried out. Born and raised a first-generation Seattleite\, Della and her family excitedly looked forward to the annual Seafair Torchlight Parade. Seeing The Seattle Chinese Community Girls Drill Team perform gave Della’s family this kind of Asian connection to an American tradition. These girls were badass. \nWhen her daughter turned 11\, Della suggested she consider joining the drill team so she could vicariously live through this experience. Her daughter realized she didn’t have many Asian friends in her school or neighborhood in North Seattle (besides her cousins) and so she joined the drill team. As a parent\, Della started learning more about the drill team’s background and history and as a visual artist she was astounded that this story has never been told in a film. With the rise in Anti-Asian hate and the climate of the world\, Della wanted this film to make an impact on this next generation\, to take better care of our blending cultures and community. Ruby Chow was her inspiration. An unintimidated\, American-born Chinese woman who cared about her community and made a difference. \nDella Chen made this film with the goal of showing the impact that community leaders Ruby and Cheryl Chow had on Seattle and Asian American girls. DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been cancelled. \nVisit the MOHAI YouTube channel to watch past events related to the exhibit\, Turtles\, Teamsters\, and Beyond: The Legacy of the Seattle WTO Protests. \nBe sure to visit the exhibition before it closes on April 27. \nIn November 1999\, The Seattle WTO Protests captured international attention and introduced millions to the collective concerns of the labor movement\, environmentalists\, and Indigenous activists\, among many others\, as the World Trade Organization sought to deregulate worker and environmental protections in favor of corporate profits. While the mass demonstrations appeared spontaneous\, they were actually the result of tireless months of organizing and coalition building\, ultimately leading to a movement that halted the activities of the WTO that week in 1999. Now we ask\, what was learned and how are we carrying this knowledge into organizing around similar issues today? \nJoin us for an intergenerational conversation between organizers and activists from the WTO protest\, and from justice movements happening now. What new hurdles and possibilities exist today when attempting to build coalitions? As a Muckleshoot Tribal member of Duwamish ancestry\, Halliday says his Native American world view\, cultural traditions\, and values\, which have sustained Native tribes throughout history\, long before colonization\, have helped him overcome the challenges associated with losing his sight.  \nToo often\, our understanding of American history begins with foreign European powers “settling” the land—as though no thriving human communities existed here. From Art and Revolution mass skill share gatherings in the years leading up\, to public art builds\, giant puppets\, street theater and pageants\, song and music\, performing roadshows and more\, explore a re-thinking of what public resistance looks and sounds like.  \nHands on Art Making: Participants will learn techniques for using cut paper to make signs for use in paste-up art\, screen printing or stenciling. Signs will be made around the theme of “Fund Communities\, Not War” or participants’ own messages. \nNote: No one turned away for lack of funds while tickets are available.
