SUMMARY:History Café: Queer Resistance and Activism in Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, and Queer (LGBTQ) people have been visible and politically active in Seattle for generations. Their activism has yielded pioneering civil rights victories. Join Historian Kevin McKenna for an exploration of local LGBTQ activism history as well as lessons this past might have for present and future activist work. \nKevin McKenna is finishing his PhD in History at the University of Washington. His dissertation\, “Safer Sex: Gay Citizen-Subjects and the Municipal State\, 1966-1995” examines the history of gay activism targeting municipal action in Seattle and the effects of those actions. He is the Section Coordinator of the LGBTQ Activism in Seattle Project\, part of the Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project\, and he has worked with the Northwest Lesbian and Gay History Museum Project. DESCRIPTION:Based on the book by MOHAI historian-emeritus Lorraine McConaghy and Seattle historian Judy Bentley\, this new musical tells the tale of young Charles Mitchell\, brought to Washington Territory as a slave in 1855\, and his harrowing escape to British Columbia. With engaging music and powerful lyrics\, it is a story of hope\, risk\, and perseverance that tells a little-known and important piece of Civil War era history in the Pacific Northwest. \nCo-authors Dr. Lorraine McConaghy and Judy Bentley will be in attendance to give an introduction to the presentation and to sign copies of the book afterward. \nPerformance is recommended for ages 7 and up. \nThis performance is presented in conjunction with 5th Avenue Theatre.
