SUMMARY:History Café: Cows in the Commons and Seattle's Unique Animal History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special History Café hosted on the historic Virginia V steamship. The Virginia V is docked directly behind MOHAI at Lake Union Park. \nAnimals of all sorts\, especially domestic ones\, have had a surprisingly important role in the making and remaking of Seattle and other major cities. Animals were property\, symbols\, and friends. \nCows were among the most important—providing milk\, labor\, meat\, and companionship\, and standing as symbols of progress or backwardness. They were never far from people’s minds as they struggled over the land that is now Seattle\, regulated urban spaces\, defined neighborhoods\, strove for a better life\, and debated what it meant to be city-dwellers. \nJoin historian Frederick L. Brown as he explores the hidden history of Seattle’s animal past\, and how it may help us think about our animal present. \nFrederick L. Brown is a Seattle-based historian\, book indexer\, and author of The City is More Than Human: An Animal History of Seattle (University of Washington Press\, 2016). He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington in 2010.

SUMMARY:History Café: Capturing Bertha & the Biggest Tunnel in the World through Film and Photography
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Catherine Bassetti captured one-of-a-kind photos and videos of the SR 99 tunnel project\, from hundreds of feet up in the air to hundreds of feet underground. Bassetti’s images capture the larger-than-life machinery\, the rescue and return of the cutterhead\, the emergence of Bertha\, and the complete disassembly of the tunnel boring machine. \nAlong the way\, she got to know the many different people who came together from around the world to work on the transportation mega-project. Bassetti will join HistoryLink‘s Jennifer Ott for a discussion about the many stories she documented with her cameras and a sampling of still images and video clips. \nA limited number of FM system and neck loop Assistive Listening Devices are available for this program. DESCRIPTION:MOHAI’s annual Denny Lecture presents the very best in regional historical scholarship. This year\, Dr. Joshua Reid discusses the historical context around modern Makah whaling and articulates a traditional future for their people. \nIn 1999\, the Makah Tribal Nation successfully hunted a gray whale. This action drew the ire of animal rights activists who often rooted their criticism in racism and stereotypes of indigenous authenticity. Drawing from the tribal nation’s relationship with the sea\, this talk will focus on Makah statements and actions from the eighteenth century onward that illustrate how they have made and continue to maintain the surrounding marine waters as their own. \nA member of the Snohomish Indian Nation\, Dr. Reid is associate professor of History and American Indian Studies at the University of Washington and author of The Sea is My Country: The Maritime World of the Makahs (Yale University Press)\, recipient of four major book awards.

Join UW Labor Archivist and Labor Archives head Conor Casey to learn how Seattle workers fought for justice on the job through the lens of the historical collections that document this history. \nAssistant Labor Archivist Crystal Rodgers will introduce and contextualize her pop-up exhibit on “Women in the Trades\,” which will be present at the event. \nConor Casey is the founding labor archivist of the Labor Archives of Washington\, University of Washington Libraries Special Collections. SUMMARY:Local 76-493: Jazz and the Racial Integration of Seattle's Musicians' Union
DESCRIPTION:Mid-century Seattle possessed a rich music scene that was sharply divided along racial lines. Barred from playing in many of the big clubs\, members of Seattle’s Black Musicians’ Union—the 493—created a vibrant jazz scene along Jackson Street. Hear from long-time union members about the significance of this musical moment and the ensuing racial integration of the Musicians’ Unions. Enjoy live jazz performed by current members of the Local 76-493. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Northwest African American Museum. \nEvent moderator:\n\nCarver Clark Gayton received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Washington. He served as UW Director of Affirmative Action Programs\, Assistant Professor of Public Administration at Florida State University\, Boeing’s Corporate Director of Educational Relations and Training\, Lecturer at the UW Evans School of Public Policy and Governance\, and Founding Executive Director Emeritus of the Northwest African American Museum.\n\nEvent panelists:\n\nKurt E. Armbruster is a Seattle native\, historian\, professional bassist\, and singer-songwriter. He is the author of numerous historical articles and books\, including Before Seattle Rocked: A City and Its Music. He is a proud card-carrying member of the Musicians’ Union of Seattle Local 76-493.\nBarney Hilliard was a founding member of the original Dave Lewis Combo in 1954 and led Carousel Dance Band for over 30 years. He joined Local 493\, which integrated with Local 76 in 1958. In 2014\, Hilliard was recognized by the Musicians’ Union for 50 years of membership.\nOverton Berry began his musical career over fifty years ago playing USO shows at bases on the west coast. Some of his many credits since include Music Director for the House of Entertainment during the Seattle World’s Fair\, Music Director of the Gene Stridel Show\, and Music Director of the Overton Berry Trio and the TOBE School of Music.

DESCRIPTION:As Seattle undergoes rapid transformation\, the Central District reflects many of the challenges neighborhoods across the city face in balancing change with preservation. Speakers will share their memories and personal connections to the histories recorded by Al Smith’s camera\, bringing these vibrant images to life. \nOn the Spot Gallery Talks take place in the Walker Gallery at 11 am and 1 pm. \nThe June 2 On the Spot Gallery Talk speaker is Inye Wokoma — Inye Wokoma’s family has lived in the Central District since the 1940s. As a journalist and visual artist\, Wokoma explores community history through personal narratives. His recent multi-media project\, ‘An Elegant Utility’\, maps the evolution of the black community in the Central District through oral histories gathered from family members.

DESCRIPTION:How do you tell the story of Seattle’s Central District\, vibrant jazz scene\, and much more through the lens of one man’s camera? \nJoin Seattle Arts Commission Chair Vivian Phillips as she hosts a conversation with curators Howard Giske\, Al “Butch” Smith\, Jr.\, Paul de Barros\, and Quin’Nita Cobbins. Gain insights into the life and legacy of Al Smith and the development of MOHAI’s new exhibit Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith. \nThe Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith companion book will be available for purchase at the MOHAI Store during this event. \nModerator:\n\nVivian Phillips chairs the Seattle Arts Commission and co-chaired the effort to establish an arts and cultural district in Seattle’s Central Area. She is a member of the LANGSTON\, KUOW\, and University of Washington Foundation boards.\n\nPanelists:\n\nHoward Giske is MOHAI’s curator of photography\, presiding over a collection of more than four million photographs shared with the public. He was a freelance photojournalist\, creating feature stories for his hometown newspapers The Seattle Times\, the Seattle P-I\, and other publications such as Rolling Stone.\nAl “Butch” Smith Jr. has worked closely with MOHAI the past several years by donating and organizing his father’s collection. Butch grew up in the Central District at 23rd and Yesler. Except for three years\, he has lived in Seattle his entire life. He earned his PhD in education at the University of Washington\, where he later served as a research professor.\nPaul de Barros has been the jazz columnist for The Seattle Times and a regular contributor to Downbeat magazine since 1982. Founder of the Seattle arts organization Earshot Jazz and past program director of the Northwest Folklife Festival\, he is the author of Jackson Street After Hours and Shall We Play That One Together?: The Life and Art of Jazz Piano Legend Marian McPartland.\nQuin’Nita Cobbins will receive a PhD in history from the University of Washington in 2018. Her research focuses on African American women’s history in the Pacific Northwest\, with a focus on gender\, politics\, leadership\, and social activism. She is currently the Assistant Content Editor and a contributor to BlackPast.org.

DESCRIPTION:As a special holiday treat\, make sure to visit MOHAI’s popular miniature Hammons House from 1–3 pm during Greet the Season on November 25. The museum’s Collection Manager Betsy Bruemmer and special guest Robert Sondheim\, who served as caretaker of the Hammons House for many years\, will be on hand to answer questions and offer behind-the-scenes insights about this remarkable miniature mansion. \nThe Hammons House is one of the most beloved objects in MOHAI’s collection of over 100\,000 artifacts. It was completed in 1948 and given as a gift to the Seattle Historical Society in 1955\, now known as the Museum of History & Industry. The Hammons House is festively decorated for the holidays and shown with a pair of original portraits that also appear in miniature inside the house.

Her writing is out or forthcoming with The Offing\, The Birds We Piled Loosely\, Bone Bouquet\, and others. \nShelly Leavens is a multi-disciplinary artist\, writer\, curator\, and oral historian.
