The ambitious project of converting the nation’s abandoned rail lines into public corridors\, supported by more than a century of advocacy\, is the subject of a recent PBS documentary\, From Rails to Trails. \nNarrated by actor Edward Norton\, the film tells the story of one of the most unlikely social movements in American history. Join MOHAI and Cascade Bicycle Club for a special showing of the film. Tyler Vasquez\, Seattle Policy and Advocacy Officer\, will serve as the event’s MC\, bringing energy while highlighting the bike lanes delivered over the past five years and sharing a vision for the future of biking across the Puget Sound. He will also engage with the audience by answering questions about Seattle’s Bicycle Network and discussing how we can carry forward the momentum built by the advocates who came before him. \nFrom 6-7pm\, celebrate and explore Riding Together: 135 Years of Cycling in Seattle\, MOHAI’s current exhibition on display through April 26.

Experience this chapter of American history as one young woman balances the demands of her family and culture and fights to see her people free of poverty. DESCRIPTION:Nestled in Rainier Beach\, the Kubota Garden is a 20-acre oasis of Northwest plants and Japanese garden concepts\, created by master landscaper Fujitaro Kubota. Join representatives from the Kubota Garden Foundation and learn about how the garden was created\, the Kubota family\, and the legacy of Japanese American resilience at the core of the grounds. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI. \nASL Interpretation and CART captioning are available during the program. SUMMARY:Transpacific Photography and the Obscura Project: Post World War II Life in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Curtis Wong asked his father a simple question: “What did you do in the War?” \nHis father Wayne pointed to a dark green wooden footlocker under the house which was covered in 50+ years of dust. \nThat was the beginning of the discovery. Once opened\, Curtis found cameras\, unexposed 35mm film and dozens of images of Japanese people and American soldiers. There were also photos of the remains of the World War II firebombing outside of Tokyo. As a Chinese American soldier in the Signal Corps during the Occupation\, Wong masterfully captured ordinary postwar life. \nJoin Curtis Wong (MOHAI Board Member)\, Devorah Romanek (MOHAI Chief of Exhibits and Interpretive Services)\, and Leonard Garfield (MOHAI Executive Director) for a discussion of Wayne Wong’s collection and the lessons we can learn from it today. \nFollowing the presentation\, Team Obscura (Asa Symons\, Caiya Wiltshire\, Hridae Walia\, and Nick Hallin) will immerse audience members in the photographic perspective of Wayne Wong\, presenting a personalized\, evolving documentary experience. The “Portola Obscura”\, a retrofitted VR headset\, tracks an individual user’s gaze\, using positional metadata to chart a narrative trajectory through Wayne’s images. The resulting documentary is then overlaid with the user’s gaze and projected to a wider audience\, offering insight into how others perceive and interpret images. \nTickets for this program are free\, but do not include access to MOHAI’s exhibitions.
