It explores the city’s regrades\, bridges\, thoroughfares\, and countless Seattle landmarks. The Great Seattle Fire\, the Gold Rush\, Pike Place Market\, the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition\, and the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair get attention\, as do breathtaking panoramas\, all in a size and clarity rarely seen.

SUMMARY:History Café: Cows in the Commons and Seattle's Unique Animal History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special History Café hosted on the historic Virginia V steamship. The Virginia V is docked directly behind MOHAI at Lake Union Park. \nAnimals of all sorts\, especially domestic ones\, have had a surprisingly important role in the making and remaking of Seattle and other major cities. Animals were property\, symbols\, and friends. \nCows were among the most important—providing milk\, labor\, meat\, and companionship\, and standing as symbols of progress or backwardness. They were never far from people’s minds as they struggled over the land that is now Seattle\, regulated urban spaces\, defined neighborhoods\, strove for a better life\, and debated what it meant to be city-dwellers. \nJoin historian Frederick L. Brown as he explores the hidden history of Seattle’s animal past\, and how it may help us think about our animal present. \nFrederick L. Brown is a Seattle-based historian\, book indexer\, and author of The City is More Than Human: An Animal History of Seattle (University of Washington Press\, 2016). He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington in 2010.

DESCRIPTION:Based on the book by MOHAI historian-emeritus Lorraine McConaghy and Seattle historian Judy Bentley\, this new musical tells the tale of young Charles Mitchell\, brought to Washington Territory as a slave in 1855\, and his harrowing escape to British Columbia. With engaging music and powerful lyrics\, it is a story of hope\, risk\, and perseverance that tells a little-known and important piece of Civil War era history in the Pacific Northwest. \nCo-authors Dr. Lorraine McConaghy and Judy Bentley will be in attendance to give an introduction to the presentation and to sign copies of the book afterward. \nPerformance is recommended for ages 7 and up. \nThis performance is presented in conjunction with 5th Avenue Theatre.
