Also enjoy special guest appearance by John McFarlane\, grandson of Elise and Roy Olmstead. \nBrad Holden is Seattle’s unofficial local historian and author of Seattle Prohibition: Bootleggers\, Rumrunners\, & Graft in the Queen City. Holden’s book brings Roy Olmstead\, the “Gentleman Bootlegger\,” to life and reveals Seattle during Prohibition with all its corruption\, unquenchable thirst for good booze\, and interesting characters like the radio whiz and inventor Al Hubbard. SUMMARY:MOHAI Mercantile Literary Series: Forging A Black Community with Dr. Quintard Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Through much of the twentieth century\, Black Seattle was synonymous with the Central District–a four-square-mile section near the geographic center of the city. Quintard Taylor explores the evolution of this community from its first few residents in the 1870s to a population of nearly forty thousand in 1970. \nWith events such as the massive influx of rural African Americans beginning with World War II and the transformation of African American community leadership in the 1960s from an integrationist to a “black power” stance\, Seattle both anticipates and mirrors national trends. Thus\, the book addresses not only a particular city in the Pacific Northwest but also the process of political change in Black America.

With the violent arrival of colonizers to the region\, access and management of these native food resources has been disrupted. Indigenous communities face some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the US and Canada\, but activists such as Dr. Charlotte Coté (Tseshaht/Nuu-chah-nulth) argue that this inequity can’t be solved simply by shipping more processed foods to grocery store shelves. DESCRIPTION:In 1936\, Victor Hugo Green\, a Harlem postman\, began publishing a guide for African American travelers to offer travel options during America’s Jim Crow era. The Green Book\, as it was known\, was a sustained success—for almost thirty years—providing Black travelers information on hotels\, restaurants\, service stations\, and other facilities where they could expect welcome “without humiliation.” \nJoin MOHAI\, Smithsonian Affiliations\, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service\, and author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian Candacy Taylor to explore the legacy of the Green Book\, its impact on communities\, businesses\, and families\, and its relevance today.
