DESCRIPTION:We’re revving our engines for Kickstands Up! 125 Years of Motorcycling in the PNW by celebrating the region’s rich history of motorcycling with champions of the culture and sport. MOHAI and the Pacific Northwest Museum of Motorcycling have selected champions to award for their contributions to the world of motorcycling. SUMMARY:Transpacific Photography and the Obscura Project: Post World War II Life in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Curtis Wong asked his father a simple question: “What did you do in the War?” \nHis father Wayne pointed to a dark green wooden footlocker under the house which was covered in 50+ years of dust. \nThat was the beginning of the discovery. Once opened\, Curtis found cameras\, unexposed 35mm film and dozens of images of Japanese people and American soldiers. There were also photos of the remains of the World War II firebombing outside of Tokyo. As a Chinese American soldier in the Signal Corps during the Occupation\, Wong masterfully captured ordinary postwar life. \nJoin Curtis Wong (MOHAI Board Member)\, Devorah Romanek (MOHAI Chief of Exhibits and Interpretive Services)\, and Leonard Garfield (MOHAI Executive Director) for a discussion of Wayne Wong’s collection and the lessons we can learn from it today. \nFollowing the presentation\, Team Obscura (Asa Symons\, Caiya Wiltshire\, Hridae Walia\, and Nick Hallin) will immerse audience members in the photographic perspective of Wayne Wong\, presenting a personalized\, evolving documentary experience. The “Portola Obscura”\, a retrofitted VR headset\, tracks an individual user’s gaze\, using positional metadata to chart a narrative trajectory through Wayne’s images. The resulting documentary is then overlaid with the user’s gaze and projected to a wider audience\, offering insight into how others perceive and interpret images. \nTickets for this program are free\, but do not include access to MOHAI’s exhibitions. SUMMARY:History Café: A Waterfront Without Wobblies
DESCRIPTION:Seattle’s central waterfront has long exemplified the ideological tensions and organizational complexities of American labor history as well as the stunning successes of worker solidarity. During the early 20th century\, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) significantly influenced local unions\, promoting “One Big Union” and dual membership in both the IWW and the International Longshoremen’s Association and other waterfront unions. Despite government suppression from 1916 to 1919\, which dismantled much of the IWW’s leadership\, syndicalist principles persisted\, reemerging during 1930s labor mobilizations. However\, Seattle’s unions were not monolithic. Longshoremen cultivated a tradition of independent craft unionism\, resisting alignment with political parties while paradoxically integrating some Communist Party members into leadership roles. Their unions prioritized rank-and-file democracy\, welcoming radicals without submitting to external party control. Conversely\, sailors’ unions often expelled leftist members\, reflecting divergent organizational cultures. \nThese divisions\, as noted by Conor Casey head of the Labor Archives of Washington\, stemmed from ideological and strategic disagreements over union autonomy\, political engagement\, and radicalism’s role in labor struggles. The waterfront’s history thus serves as a lens to examine the resilience of syndicalist and other radical ideals\, the successes of worker solidarity and occupational wisdom\, and the persistent fractures that sometimes hindered broader efforts at unified class solidarity\, leaving a legacy of contested radicalism in Pacific Northwest labor movements.

Left in the care of Bailey Gatzert Elementary\, these dolls were never retrieved. This project aimed to honor the narratives of those affected by the Japanese American incarceration\, particularly through the lens of personal and communal loss tied to these cherished artifacts. \nYorioka\, a fourth-generation Japanese American\, shared her own familial connections to this history\, detailing the poignant memories of her grandmother\, who lamented the loss of her dolls amid the chaos of incarceration. As Yorioka reflected\, “My grandmother’s greatest loss…was the loss of her Girls’ Day dolls\,” emphasizing the emotional weight attached to such objects\, which symbolize a broader cultural trauma. \nThe presentation underscored significant themes such as cultural identity and the impact of war on personal histories. Yorioka highlighted how the Japanese American community in Seattle\, once thriving\, faced disruption and trauma due to Executive Order 9066\, leading to a respectful discussion about the legacy of Principal Ada Mahon of Bailey Gatzert Elementary. Students shared mixed memories of their experiences that ranged from patriotism instilled by Mahon to a struggle with their Japanese American identity. \nIn reflecting on the relevance of these stories\, Yorioka reiterated the importance of remembering and sharing personal histories\, especially in a world still grappling with issues of discrimination and identity. As echoed in Laura Kusaka’s insight\, “We must keep our minds and our hearts open to hear these stories\,” a reminder of the ongoing need for understanding and empathy in our diverse societal landscape. The program encouraged attendees to connect with their own familial narratives\, fostering a deeper awareness of collective histories in today’s context.
