SUMMARY:From Rails to Trails Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:If you have ever ridden on the Burke-Gilman Trail\, you’ve traversed part of a vast\, 3\,700-mile network known as the Great American Rail-Trail. The ambitious project of converting the nation’s abandoned rail lines into public corridors\, supported by more than a century of advocacy\, is the subject of a recent PBS documentary\, From Rails to Trails. \nNarrated by actor Edward Norton\, the film tells the story of one of the most unlikely social movements in American history. Join MOHAI and Cascade Bicycle Club for a special showing of the film. Tyler Vasquez\, Seattle Policy and Advocacy Officer\, will serve as the event’s MC\, bringing energy while highlighting the bike lanes delivered over the past five years and sharing a vision for the future of biking across the Puget Sound. He will also engage with the audience by answering questions about Seattle’s Bicycle Network and discussing how we can carry forward the momentum built by the advocates who came before him. \nFrom 6-7pm\, celebrate and explore Riding Together: 135 Years of Cycling in Seattle\, MOHAI’s current exhibition on display through April 26.

SUMMARY:History Café: Indigenous Forestry
DESCRIPTION:Join local Tribal forestry professionals\, who will trace millennia of stewardship by Indigenous peoples to manage forests based on holistic worldviews of connectedness of communities with their environments. With colonization\, this ethos was displaced with forest policy centered on timber production\, resulting in disruption of environmental processes. Today\, Indigenous peoples are asserting greater influence over management of their ancestral forest lands through their exercise of self-determination and application of traditional knowledge and western science. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI. \nASL Interpretation and CART captioning are available during the program. SUMMARY:History Café: The Nisqually Quake and Fixing the Bricks
DESCRIPTION:MOHAI invites you to a powerful evening exploring how earthquakes have shaped Seattle’s past—and how they could define our future. \nSeattle sits in the shadow of seismic risk\, from the massive Cascadia Subduction Zone to the deep tremors of the Nisqually Earthquake. But our community’s relationship with earthquakes goes back much further\, woven into Indigenous knowledge\, settlement patterns\, and the very bricks that built our neighborhoods. \nJoin a panel of experts as we connect history\, science\, and community resilience: \n\nPacific Northwest Seismic Network will share the latest science on Cascadia\, Nisqually\, and other earthquake scenarios that could shake our region.\nCalvin Bray (Chehalis Tribe) will discuss “Early Warnings from Ancient Stories” — how Native myths and oral histories have long served as vital tools for earthquake awareness and preparedness.\nHistoric South Downtown will highlight the history and vulnerability of Pioneer Square and the Chinatown-International District\, two of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods most at risk in the next big quake.\nCity of Seattle will share what’s being done about Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings—their dangers in an earthquake\, and the city’s steps to improve safety before disaster strikes.\n\nThis event will spark urgent conversations about memory\, science\, and preparedness. Together\, we’ll look at how lessons from the past and present can help us build a safer future—before the ground moves again. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI. Support for this program is provided by the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation. \nASL Interpretation and CART captioning are available during the program. In addition\, a limited number of Assistive Listening Devices are available upon request. For more accessibility support\, email programs@mohai.org before the program. \nGrab some food for thought–light food and drink will be available to purchase in the atrium. \nIf you can’t make it to the museum\, tune in live on the MOHAI YouTube channel to virtually attend this event.

SUMMARY:Transpacific Photography and the Obscura Project: Post World War II Life in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Curtis Wong asked his father a simple question: “What did you do in the War?” \nHis father Wayne pointed to a dark green wooden footlocker under the house which was covered in 50+ years of dust. \nThat was the beginning of the discovery. Once opened\, Curtis found cameras\, unexposed 35mm film and dozens of images of Japanese people and American soldiers. There were also photos of the remains of the World War II firebombing outside of Tokyo. As a Chinese American soldier in the Signal Corps during the Occupation\, Wong masterfully captured ordinary postwar life. \nJoin Curtis Wong (MOHAI Board Member)\, Devorah Romanek (MOHAI Chief of Exhibits and Interpretive Services)\, and Leonard Garfield (MOHAI Executive Director) for a discussion of Wayne Wong’s collection and the lessons we can learn from it today. \nFollowing the presentation\, Team Obscura (Asa Symons\, Caiya Wiltshire\, Hridae Walia\, and Nick Hallin) will immerse audience members in the photographic perspective of Wayne Wong\, presenting a personalized\, evolving documentary experience. The “Portola Obscura”\, a retrofitted VR headset\, tracks an individual user’s gaze\, using positional metadata to chart a narrative trajectory through Wayne’s images. The resulting documentary is then overlaid with the user’s gaze and projected to a wider audience\, offering insight into how others perceive and interpret images. \nTickets for this program are free\, but do not include access to MOHAI’s exhibitions. If you would like to see all that MOHAI has to offer during your visit\, you can purchase museum admission here. \nASL Interpretation and CART captioning are available during the program. In addition\, a limited number of Assistive Listening Devices are available upon request. For more accessibility support\, email programs@mohai.org two weeks before the program.
