SUMMARY:Unpaving SODO Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:What does SODO mean to you? Industrial space\, maybe sports\, perhaps a no-man’s land between Pioneer Square’s nightlife and the cities further south. How do we even define this territory south of downtown where the Duwamish watershed meets the Puget Sound? A liminal space that began with the natural foundation of tidal flats and the flow of a river. An urban landscape that has been literally built on the dreams of manifest destiny. It has been occupied and enjoyed by the commercial minded and marginalized alike – those pushing boundaries and those enforcing them. \nJoin Invisible Histories on a 1-mile immersive guided walking tour of the cityscape you pass daily but never truly see. Storytelling\, history and theatrical elements will enliven these spaces known as SODO. Guests will uniquely experience the past\, from the untold stories of Seattle’s evolving landscapes and industries\, to the hidden histories of the depression era Hooverville\, all the way to the energetic underground club scene of the 1990s. Explore the layers beneath the pavement while we bring history to life like never before! \nThis tour requires walking between multiple sites in SODO. DESCRIPTION:MOHAI invites you to a powerful evening exploring how earthquakes have shaped Seattle’s past—and how they could define our future. \nSeattle sits in the shadow of seismic risk\, from the massive Cascadia Subduction Zone to the deep tremors of the Nisqually Earthquake. But our community’s relationship with earthquakes goes back much further\, woven into Indigenous knowledge\, settlement patterns\, and the very bricks that built our neighborhoods. \nJoin a panel of experts as we connect history\, science\, and community resilience: \n\nPacific Northwest Seismic Network will share the latest science on Cascadia\, Nisqually\, and other earthquake scenarios that could shake our region.\nCalvin Bray (Chehalis Tribe) will discuss “Early Warnings from Ancient Stories” — how Native myths and oral histories have long served as vital tools for earthquake awareness and preparedness.\nHistoric South Downtown will highlight the history and vulnerability of Pioneer Square and the Chinatown-International District\, two of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods most at risk in the next big quake.\nCity of Seattle will share what’s being done about Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings—their dangers in an earthquake\, and the city’s steps to improve safety before disaster strikes.\n\nThis event will spark urgent conversations about memory\, science\, and preparedness. Together\, we’ll look at how lessons from the past and present can help us build a safer future—before the ground moves again. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI.
