SUMMARY:History Café: The Teen Dance Ordinance and Youth Political Action
DESCRIPTION:In 1985\, Seattle’s vibrant all-ages club scene was abruptly quieted by passage of the Teen Dance Ordinance. Young aspiring musicians could still play in venues like community centers\, but it wasn’t the same as the club scene. Youth activism grew\, culminating in a series of public meetings where youth and famous allies\, like Krist Novoselic\, formerly of Nirvana\, spoke out in favor of all-ages clubs. The campaign led to the replacement of the Teen Dance Ordinance with the All-Ages Dance Ordinance in 2002. \nJoin us for a panel discussion about the history of Seattle’s all-ages venues\, how youth activism swayed the city council\, and the campaign’s lasting impact on Seattle’s music scene. \nPanelists include: \n\nGreg Nickels\, former mayor of Seattle\nLibby Hopfauf\, Audiovisual Archivist for Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound (MIPoPS) and Seattle Municipal Archives\nRicky Graboski\, executive director of The Vera Project\n\nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between MOHAI and HistoryLink. DESCRIPTION:Follow the life of author and labor activist Anna Louise Strong in this sweeping documentary film. \nAs a reporter she covered the major political revolutions of the 20th century in Russia\, Spain\, and China. Her political vision took shape in the Pacific Northwest after witnessing the 1916 Everett massacre and chronicling the 1919 Seattle General Strike. Stay after the screening for a discussion with the film director Lucy Ostrander and local historian Stephanie Ogle. \nDive into labor issues past and present with representatives from the UW Labor Archives and Fair Work Center\, who will be providing resources in the Faye G. Allen Grand Atrium before and after the screening. \nPlease plan to arrive early as there is limited seating.
