SUMMARY:History Café: Minoru Yamasaki's Place in Seattle Architectural History
DESCRIPTION:Real-time\, live captioning and ASL Interpretation is available during the program through generous support of the Institute for Museum and Library Services. For additional accessibility support\, please contact programs@mohai.org. \nWorld-famous architect Minoru Yamasaki (1912–1986) is known in Seattle for designing three iconic buildings: the Pacific Science Center\, the IBM Building\, and the Rainier Tower. But there is much more to his complex and consequential relationship with the city of his birth. Professor Paul Kidder will explore Yamasaki’s University of Washington training\, his influence on local architectural styles\, his battle with preservationists\, and the relationship between his Seattle buildings and his New York World Trade Center design. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between MOHAI and HistoryLink. Join MOHAI and HistoryLink on the third Wednesday of the month for a discussion about local history—both popular and obscure—and discover something new. \nDetailed information on how to participate will be provided via email following your registration.

SUMMARY:The da Vinci Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:Leonardo’s vision of a world in which nature and human experience are closely aligned provides both inspiration and a challenge to modern society.  Join leading scholars and innovators as they debate the value of Leonardo’s vision for a humanistic society and explore how it impacts our world today. \nModerated by Leonard Garfield. Panelists Include: \n\nLorraine McConaghy\nAna Pinto da Silva\nMike Lombardi\nSean MacLeod\n\nSpace is limited so register soon! Detailed information on how to participate will be provided via email following your registration. Real-time\, automated captioning is available during the program. For additional support\, contact programs@mohai.org. \nAs a catalyst for relevant community conversation\, MOHAI’s public programs include a diverse range of speakers and perspectives related to life in our region\, past and present. In presenting this program MOHAI does not endorse or advocate any specific policies represented by the speakers\, their organizations\, or the co-presenters. \nEvent Summary\nThis event focused on the intersection of innovation\, history\, and community in light of the exhibit “da Vinci Inventions.” The conversation explored the legacy of Leonardo da Vinci\, alongside the modern challenges and opportunities facing innovation today. Panelists included Ana Pinto da Silva\, Dr. Lorraine McConaghy\, Michael Lombardi\, and Sean MacLeod\, who discussed various drivers of innovation\, the importance of diversity in perspectives\, and the potential of civic engagement. \nKey themes emerged throughout the discussion. Lorraine McConaghy emphasized the importance of creating arenas where respectful disagreement could lead to constructive dialogue\, suggesting\, “the goal of disagreement is discussion and decision.” This highlights the need for civic spaces that encourage openness and collaboration\, particularly in light of today’s polarized environment. \nSean MacLeod noted the significance of energy within groups\, stating\, “finding that balance between technology and our natural world around us” is crucial. This statement reflects the panel’s broader concern about how individuals can harmonize their personal energy with collaborative innovation efforts. \nAna Pinto da Silva further developed the conversation around community and care\, asserting that “dreams matter” and advocating for a reimagined urban environment centered on inclusivity. She linked the etymology of “hearth” to “heart\,” suggesting that creating caring cities is critical to fostering future innovations. \nThe discussion concluded with a collective optimism about the potentials of addressing climate change and health crises\, emphasizing the imperative of kindness and civility in community engagement. As societies emerge from the pandemic\, these interactions become integral to reinvigorating civic discourse and collaborative innovation\, representing a broader move towards a more inclusive ideal city shaped by multiple voices and perspectives. This dialogue underscores the relevance of historical insights into contemporary challenges\, encouraging ongoing reflection and action in pursuit of communal well-being and innovation.

SUMMARY:History Café: How Railroads Brought a Checkerboard Landscape to the Northwest
DESCRIPTION:How did Northwest land end up in a checkerboard of land use? \nGrants to the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 19th century set up a pattern of public and private lands that placed homesteads\, towns\, tree farms\, and federal forest reserves intermingled with each other\, all defined by railroad tracks. \nJoin Charlie Raines\, Director of the Sierra Club Cascade Checkerboard Project\, as he shares newly created maps that show the pattern from Puget Sound to the Columbia River as it evolved over 150 years. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between MOHAI and HistoryLink. \nDetailed information on how to participate will be provided via email following your registration. SUMMARY:History Café: Hanford and the Homegrown Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:During World War II and throughout the Cold War\, the Hanford Works in Eastern Washington produced plutonium for atomic weapons. The use of these weapons led to enormous loss of life in Japan\, an arms race\, and unprecedented levels of contamination of the landscape at home. Even today\, the massive scale of the Hanford Site often overshadows the stories of the people who built it\, worked there\, and are cleaning it up. \nJoin Steve Olson\, author of The Apocalypse Factory: Plutonium and the Making of the Atomic Age\, and Michael Mays\, director of the Hanford History Project\, for a discussion of the stories of scientists\, farmers\, engineers\, laborers\, and bureaucrats they have uncovered. \nHistory Café is produced as a partnership between HistoryLink and MOHAI. \nDetailed information on how to participate will be provided via email following your registration.
