DESCRIPTION:In the Central District\, the Liberty Bank Building stood as a testament to the resilience of a community facing redlining and racist disinvestment. \nWith the original building gone\, a coalition of non-profits formed to make this historic site a model of community-led development\, designed to address displacement of the African American community from the Central District. \nRepresentatives from Africatown\, Byrd Barr Place\, Capitol Hill Housing\, and the original Liberty Bank will share their inspiration for the project that they developed in partnership with the Black Community Impact Alliance. Bring your favorite WWI era artifact and join the conversation about how WWI impacted life in America. \nDisplay your family antiques from the WWI era alongside artifacts from the Black Heritage Society of Washington State\, Buffalo Soldiers Museum\, and the Suquamish Museum. This is a great opportunity to share your stories and learn about the WWI era artifacts that belong to members of our community. Plan to be present with your heirloom while it is on display. No firearms\, furniture\, or anything larger than what you can carry. \nAt 1 pm\, hear about the important contributions that black soldiers have made towards American history in a special presentation with Jackie Jones-Hook of the Buffalo Soldiers Museum\, historian Stephen Corbett\, and Christopher E. Johnson from the National Park Service. (Update: Due to the partial government shutdown\, Christopher E. Olivereau opposed U.S. involvement in World War I and encouraged men to refuse to fight. This act of dissent led to her conviction under the Espionage Act. \nThe right to dissent is seen by some as an act of treason\, and by others as an act of patriotism. Join moderator Scott Winn\, civil liberties expert Bryan Adamson\, and historian Lorraine McConaghy to explore patriotism\, pacifism\, and the limits of free speech. \nWorld War I Music: Begin the evening with a special performance of World War I music by a quartet from Orchestra Seattle and Seattle Chamber Singers. DESCRIPTION:Accusations of “fake news” have dominated the national news cycle for the last two years. Misinformation runs rampant on social media and erodes the public’s trust in traditional media. This is not a new problem. Political distortion of truth characterizes much of America’s press history. \nJoin veteran journalist Enrique Cerna as he moderates an important community conversation with historians and media experts that explores how to find the facts amid the fiction. \nPanelists include: \n\nDavid Horsey\, Pulitzer Prize-winning Political Cartoonist\nDi Zhang\, Librarian at the Seattle Public Library and creator of the Fake News Survival Guide\nJevin West\, Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School and co-developer of the new course Calling BS\nMarcus Harrison Green\, Staff Reporter at the Seattle Times and co-founder of the South Seattle Emerald\n\nPresented in partnership with King County TV. \nComplimentary childcare available during the program by advance registration for children ages 4 and up. \nSign Language Interpretation is available upon request. SUMMARY:History Café: Fighting Segregated Housing in the 1970s and 1980s
DESCRIPTION:What exactly did Seattle’s open housing movement achieve? How were Seattle’s neighborhoods transformed in the wake of fair housing legislation? \nOnce hemmed in to the Central District by restrictive covenants\, Seattle’s African American population was slowly moving southward during the 1970s and 1980s. Learn about the ways in which Seattle’s segregated housing patterns were challenged and how the city’s racial geography changed in the midst of a housing crisis. \nMichael Matsumaru recently completed his PhD in history at Carnegie Mellon University. His dissertation is entitled “Unmasking a City: Blacks\, Asians and the Struggle Against Segregated Housing in 20th Century Seattle.”
