SUMMARY:History Café: The Teen Dance Ordinance and Youth Political Action
DESCRIPTION:In 1985\, Seattle’s vibrant all-ages club scene was abruptly quieted by passage of the Teen Dance Ordinance. Young aspiring musicians could still play in venues like community centers\, but it wasn’t the same as the club scene. Youth activism grew\, culminating in a series of public meetings where youth and famous allies\, like Krist Novoselic\, formerly of Nirvana\, spoke out in favor of all-ages clubs. DESCRIPTION:In the Central District\, the Liberty Bank Building stood as a testament to the resilience of a community facing redlining and racist disinvestment. \nWith the original building gone\, a coalition of non-profits formed to make this historic site a model of community-led development\, designed to address displacement of the African American community from the Central District. \nRepresentatives from Africatown\, Byrd Barr Place\, Capitol Hill Housing\, and the original Liberty Bank will share their inspiration for the project that they developed in partnership with the Black Community Impact Alliance. SUMMARY:History Café: Fighting Segregated Housing in the 1970s and 1980s
DESCRIPTION:What exactly did Seattle’s open housing movement achieve? How were Seattle’s neighborhoods transformed in the wake of fair housing legislation? \nOnce hemmed in to the Central District by restrictive covenants\, Seattle’s African American population was slowly moving southward during the 1970s and 1980s. Learn about the ways in which Seattle’s segregated housing patterns were challenged and how the city’s racial geography changed in the midst of a housing crisis. \nMichael Matsumaru recently completed his PhD in history at Carnegie Mellon University. His dissertation is entitled “Unmasking a City: Blacks\, Asians and the Struggle Against Segregated Housing in 20th Century Seattle.”
