The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Historic Preservation program is creating a first-of-its-kind historic context study about disability activism. Notable speakers included Michael de Lange\, a neurodivergent historian\, alongside a diverse panel of disability advocates. \nKey themes emerged from the conversation\, including the historical neglect of disability history in preservation efforts. De Lange highlighted that there had been no recognized landmarks related to disability activism despite over 400 existing landmarks in Seattle. This reflects broader societal trends where disability issues are often marginalized. He quoted\, “We know that disability history has often been overlooked\,” illustrating the need for inclusive narratives. \nPanelists\, such as Elizabeth Ralston and Carol Rozumalski\, shared personal experiences of internalized ableism and the importance of community support. Ralston remarked on her transition from merely fitting in to becoming an advocate\, emphasizing the significance of storytelling in fostering understanding about disability. Rozumalski spoke about the continuous journey of activism\, illustrating how advocacy is interwoven with everyday life and relationships. \nThe discussion also presented suggestions for improving cross-disability organizing and integrating accessibility into various sectors. Ralston emphasized that “nothing about us without us” should be a guiding principle\, advocating for authentic representation in decision-making processes. \nIn reflection\, the collected discourse highlights the ongoing relevance of disability activism\, especially amid rising societal discussions about inclusivity and equity. DESCRIPTION:In 1985\, Seattle’s vibrant all-ages club scene was abruptly quieted by passage of the Teen Dance Ordinance. Young aspiring musicians could still play in venues like community centers\, but it wasn’t the same as the club scene. Youth activism grew\, culminating in a series of public meetings where youth and famous allies\, like Krist Novoselic\, formerly of Nirvana\, spoke out in favor of all-ages clubs. DESCRIPTION:Join MOHAI educators as we explore the art and messaging of WWI-era posters! \nGet hands-on with primary sources\, activities\, and art-making that use historical thinking to build media literacy in the classroom. Learn how to conduct research using MOHAI’s collection\, build tools that support object-based inquiry\, and create multi-disciplinary learning experiences that stretch students’ critical and creative thinking skills. The workshop includes time in WW1 America and lunch\, plus educators will leave with primary sources\, tools\, and activities to take back to the classroom. \nThree clock hours are available through Puget Sound Educational Service District.

DESCRIPTION:Can you make the act of thinking a crime? \nAccording to local radical Louise Olivereau\, the Espionage Act of 1917 did just that. Olivereau opposed U.S. involvement in World War I and encouraged men to refuse to fight. This act of dissent led to her conviction under the Espionage Act. \nThe right to dissent is seen by some as an act of treason\, and by others as an act of patriotism. Join moderator Scott Winn\, civil liberties expert Bryan Adamson\, and historian Lorraine McConaghy to explore patriotism\, pacifism\, and the limits of free speech. \nWorld War I Music: Begin the evening with a special performance of World War I music by a quartet from Orchestra Seattle and Seattle Chamber Singers.
