DESCRIPTION:How Arts Organizing Shut Down the WTO: Join Art and Revolution to learn how arts organizing and artists and performers were at the center of the mass nonviolent direct-action that led to the shutdown and collapse of the 1999 Seattle WTO Summit. From Art and Revolution mass skill share gatherings in the years leading up\, to public art builds\, giant puppets\, street theater and pageants\, song and music\, performing roadshows and more\, explore a re-thinking of what public resistance looks and sounds like.  \nHands on Art Making: Participants will learn techniques for using cut paper to make signs for use in paste-up art\, screen printing or stenciling. Notable speakers included Michael de Lange\, a neurodivergent historian\, alongside a diverse panel of disability advocates. \nKey themes emerged from the conversation\, including the historical neglect of disability history in preservation efforts. De Lange highlighted that there had been no recognized landmarks related to disability activism despite over 400 existing landmarks in Seattle. This reflects broader societal trends where disability issues are often marginalized. He quoted\, “We know that disability history has often been overlooked\,” illustrating the need for inclusive narratives. \nPanelists\, such as Elizabeth Ralston and Carol Rozumalski\, shared personal experiences of internalized ableism and the importance of community support. Ralston remarked on her transition from merely fitting in to becoming an advocate\, emphasizing the significance of storytelling in fostering understanding about disability. Rozumalski spoke about the continuous journey of activism\, illustrating how advocacy is interwoven with everyday life and relationships. \nThe discussion also presented suggestions for improving cross-disability organizing and integrating accessibility into various sectors. Young aspiring musicians could still play in venues like community centers\, but it wasn’t the same as the club scene. Youth activism grew\, culminating in a series of public meetings where youth and famous allies\, like Krist Novoselic\, formerly of Nirvana\, spoke out in favor of all-ages clubs.
