DESCRIPTION:If you have ever ridden on the Burke-Gilman Trail\, you’ve traversed part of a vast\, 3\,700-mile network known as the Great American Rail-Trail. The ambitious project of converting the nation’s abandoned rail lines into public corridors\, supported by more than a century of advocacy\, is the subject of a recent PBS documentary\, From Rails to Trails. \nNarrated by actor Edward Norton\, the film tells the story of one of the most unlikely social movements in American history. Join MOHAI and Cascade Bicycle Club for a special showing of the film. Tyler Vasquez\, Seattle Policy and Advocacy Officer\, will serve as the event’s MC\, bringing energy while highlighting the bike lanes delivered over the past five years and sharing a vision for the future of biking across the Puget Sound. He will also engage with the audience by answering questions about Seattle’s Bicycle Network and discussing how we can carry forward the momentum built by the advocates who came before him. \nFrom 6-7pm\, celebrate and explore Riding Together: 135 Years of Cycling in Seattle\, MOHAI’s current exhibition on display through April 26.

Notable speakers included Michael de Lange\, a neurodivergent historian\, alongside a diverse panel of disability advocates. \nKey themes emerged from the conversation\, including the historical neglect of disability history in preservation efforts. De Lange highlighted that there had been no recognized landmarks related to disability activism despite over 400 existing landmarks in Seattle. This reflects broader societal trends where disability issues are often marginalized. He quoted\, “We know that disability history has often been overlooked\,” illustrating the need for inclusive narratives. \nPanelists\, such as Elizabeth Ralston and Carol Rozumalski\, shared personal experiences of internalized ableism and the importance of community support. Ralston remarked on her transition from merely fitting in to becoming an advocate\, emphasizing the significance of storytelling in fostering understanding about disability. Rozumalski spoke about the continuous journey of activism\, illustrating how advocacy is interwoven with everyday life and relationships. \nThe discussion also presented suggestions for improving cross-disability organizing and integrating accessibility into various sectors. Ralston emphasized that “nothing about us without us” should be a guiding principle\, advocating for authentic representation in decision-making processes. \nIn reflection\, the collected discourse highlights the ongoing relevance of disability activism\, especially amid rising societal discussions about inclusivity and equity.
